The annual Telecommunica Symposium and Networking Event was held on Thursday, April 23 from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building.
Master's in Telecom students presented their research projects as part of a competition before a jury of industry representatives from companies such as Motorola, Spacenet, and Andrew Wireless Solutions. Alumni and special guests such as Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC) Professor James Pichardo also comprised the jury. The winner of the competition was Siddharth Mehta, who presented on the topic "Assisted GPS and Location Based Services (LBS) in Mobile Handsets and Networks."
Telecom industry professionals also spoke on the latest trends in the areas of wireless systems, networking, public policy and entrepreneurship. The program of speakers and topics included the following:
Javad Bouroumand, Senior Manager of Cisco Systems:
"Opportunities in the telecommunications industry as related to advanced applications, and the related skills and talent needed in the emerging work force to capture them."
Eric Dean, Chief Technology Officer, The Ventura Group:
"Health Networks including the Federal Health Architecture (formerly NHIN), Rural Health, Health Information Exchanges and the challenges related to technology and security."
Michael Henderson, Regional RF Manager, Cricket Communications:
"Wireless History/Opportunities & Expectations of a New Graduating Engineer: Who Cricket Communications is, and What Opportunities are Available?"
Manuel Mendoza, Professor at Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Network Planning and Engineering Manager for WIND Telecom in Santo Domingo:
"Mobile WiMAX Implementation in the Third World: Non-Conventional Engineering Problems"
The event was followed by a networking reception that allowed students, faculty and staff to mingle and take in the posters that accompanied the student research projects.
Telecommunica was hosted by the M.S. Program in Telecommunications and the Telecommunications Student and Alumni Network (TSAN). The event drew over 100 participants.
